POLICE were taunted for 20 minutes in Stourport town centre in the early hours, magistrates were told.
John Barnett, prosecuting at Kidderminster, told the court a patrol in Lombard Street heard a man saying "I can smell coppers. You can smell them a mile off". The abuse persisted despite warnings from several officers.
Philip Newberry, 36, of Old Ford Walk, Stourport, admitted using abusive and offensive language and was fined £135, with £55 costs.
He had drunk more than he was accustomed to, said his solicitor, Gary Harper. He had since apologised to the police.
