A YOUNG top shot has got the competition in his sights after receiving "fantastic" support from Wyre Forest folk following an appeal for support.

Andrew Howard, 18, of Imperial Avenue, Kidderminster, is the top county shot for both men and juniors and is in the Great Britain junior team.

The Ray Mercer Sporting Foundation - set up by the Shuttle/Times and News to help young Wyre Forest sportspeople - has just given him a £250 grant and Wyre Forest Business Club has donated two tasty prizes for an up-coming competition.

"This year we'll need about £2,500," said dad Bob Howard. "He will compete in Germany and the World Championships in Finland. The money is for top-of-the-range kit, and ammunition is very expensive."

Mr Howard is organising a competition at which his sharp-shooting son will take aim at a target and people can guess his score.

Those nearest the mark can win meals at Bewdley's Ramada Hotel and the Sun and Slipper in Mamble, and a computer check-up donated independently.

"We want to say thank-you to the people who are backing him. I'm astounded by people's generosity."

The competition will take place on Saturday at Kidderminster Rifle Club, Stourport. For details call Mr Howard on 01562 741432.
