THE electricity supplies of thousands of Worcester residents will be controlled by a German company following a multi-billion pound deal, due to be clinched today.

UK electricity supplier Innogy - home to the npower brand - is set to be snapped up by German power giant RWE in a £5.4bn deal.

Npower would not confirm the exact number of subscribers in the Worcestershire area, but the company has seven million customers nationally.

It employs more than 400 people between its head office in Warndon and at its office in Blackpole Road. A spokeswoman for Swindon-based Innogy confirmed an offer of £3.1bn was due to be made by RWE today, with an additional £2.3m taken on in debts.

"We envisage the process taking around two months to complete," she said.

City reports yesterday said the Innogy board had already met to agree the offer.
