The 32nd annual spring show organised by Staunton & District WI was a great success with entries slightly up on last year. The standard of exhibits was excellent as several of the judges remarked. The show held in Staunton & Corse Village Hall made a riot of colour for visitors as they entered the hall and the air was heavy with the scent of the spring bulbs and floral exhibits.

There were 69 classes including the colourful entries of children from Staunton & Corse Church of England School.

The show is run by the show sub-committee with Barbara Bubb, show chairman. They had been working all through the year to make the show as fresh and varied as possible and they were all specially thanked by the president Ursula Groves-Smith, especially Barbara and show secretary Margaret Barclay and everyone who had helped and contributed to what is a great achievement to keep the show going so well for 32 consecutive years. Earlier Rosemary Bishton, county chairman Gloucestershire Federation of the WI, had visited the show and congratulated the show committee.

This year there was a particularly good entry in the cookery and floral sections but crafts were slightly down but those who did enter produced a very high standard.

The cup for the best in show was awarded to Jennifer Clayton for her exhibit depicting the Queen's Golden Jubilee. The Darley Cup was awarded to the WI member with the highest points overall, Ann Vaughan Davies, with 45 points. Ann also won the Clayton Cup for bulbs and flora art (26pts), Barbara Bubb won the Houlday Cup for cookery (17pts) and in the crafts section Barbara Padley was awarded the Needle Cup. The Junior Cup went to Spike Bradford.

The show, which is not intended as a fundraising event, includes a raffle, tombola, cakes and plants and teas with home made cakes which helps to defray expenses.
