VINNIE Jones, ex-Wimbledon footballer and film star, presented team captain Abigail Salmon from Malvern Girls' College with the trophy when they were crowned national lacrosse champions at Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire on Saturday.

Every year, nearly 70 schools from all over the country take part in this prestigious tournament, with only 20 making it through to finals day.

MGC continued their excellent form by winning all of the matches in their section, scoring 17 goals and conceding only two.

They then destroyed St Paul's, London 7-1 in the semi-final with a wonderful display of teamwork and individual excellence.

The final, against Queen Anne's, Reading was a tense game with MGC trailing 1-2 with only two minutes remaining. MGC had all of the possession in the last few minutes and goals from Alice Paisley and Izzy Davies finally clinched a well-deserved victory.

Coach, Mrs Jo Marks said afterwards: "I am thrilled for the girls. This is a huge achievement of which they should be very proud."
