A DISPLAY of flowers is proving the crowning glory in a Malvern school's jubilee celebrations.

All the pupils at St James' Primary School in West Malvern spent a day last autumn planting several hundred crocuses in the shape of a crown.

Now the plants have flowered in yellow, purple and white, providing an attractive sight at the front of the school as well as helping with the children's learning.

Teacher Gill Burrows said that the reaction from both the pupils and the public had been very positive.

"They look brilliant. Everyone in the village that's walked past has commented on them," she said.

"We knew we wanted to put a feature on the lawn and the crocuses were low enough so they wouldn't be damaged by the wind.

"It's also a time when we are all here, unlike summer plants when we'd all be on holiday. This is something that would keep growing and something that the children would remember."
