MALVERN Hills District Council wants to take on the power to make temporary road closures for Golden Jubilee events.

Members of the district council's executive committee endorsed an approach to Worcestershire County Council at a meeting on Tuesday night and also agreed to waive fees for future non-commercial parades and processions.

MHDC is expecting a large number of street parties and other events to be organised in the district for the Golden Jubilee celebrations in June.

It has asked Worcestershire County Council to delegate powers enabling it to temporarily close roads under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

The Government recently advised that charges for road closures for Jubilee events should only be made in the most exceptional circumstances, such as commercial events.

It is also likely that MHDC will be able to make a single order to cover all Jubilee road closures in the district so reducing workload and costs.

In moving the recommendation, executive committee member Coun Alex Stewart-Cleary urged people to make their plans for the Jubilee in good time.

He said: "If people do want to have a closure can they let us know early so when we put an advert in the paper people will know what roads are closed."

There has previously been concerns that the cost of road closures will put people off organising events.
