DROITWICH Lifesaving and Lifeguard Club are hosting a sponsored lifesaving night on Sunday, March 24, in aid of Acorns Children's Hospice Trust.

The evening will start at 6pm, and about 25 people will be taking part. Each person will have all of their lifesaving skills and knowledge put to the test by having to throw a rope accurately to a person in the water 12 metres away, tow a person over some distance and perform lifesaving actions on a manikin that represents a person having had a heart attack.

The club is hoping to raise a substantial amount whilst demonstrating valuable skills on how to rescue someone that may be drowning and how to resuscitate a person that is not breathing and has no pulse.

The youngest person taking part will be 10 years old and the eldest will be in their late thirties.

All those involved have been members of the club for some period of time and are working towards various Royal Lifesaving Society awards ranging from the Rookie Star grade awards for members aged 10 to 14 years; Bronze medallion to Distinction Awards for those aged over 14 years, and all members take various levels of awards in resuscitation and basic first aid.

Tony Meeson Club Chairman said: "This is a great opportunity for club members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills for saving lives as well as raising money for a local charity. We are particularly keen to support the Acorns Three Counties Appeal to build a new hospice for life-limited children in Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire."

Not only has the club hosted various sponsored events - from swimming the equivalent distance of the channel at Upton Warren Sailing Centre in aid of the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow trust to a sponsored swim in aid of comic relief - its members have recently taken part in a local lifesaving competition.
