MR Philip Bushill-Matthews MEP (You Say, March 15) outlines five ways in which the Conservative MEPs think the European Union could be improved ranging from "No EU taxes" to "cutting red tape".

All good points. However, he is either naive, or he thinks the readers of these columns are naive.

The members of the European Parliament are powerless. It's merely an expensive talking shop, and any decisions that are actually made there can be overturned by the European Commission.

European MPs are powerless - so what chance has a handful of Conservative MEPs of changing anything? As a nation, we're constantly being sucked deeper into full political union and the formation of a centralised European superstate.

The process cannot be reversed, unless we leave the European Union. Yes, then we'll be free to set our own taxes, and "cut red tape".

We will also be able to manage our economy for the benefit of our own people, and trade with whichever country we chose.

What's more, we'll save ourselves enough money to be able to build a new hospital (like the one recently opened in Worcester) every week of the year!
