AN abusive alcoholic grabbed a policeman by the testicles and kicked his WPC colleague when they tried to arrest him for making rude gestures at them.

Worcester magistrates heard William Jones admit using abusive behaviour and assaulting police officers Peter Myatt and Catherine Bone in the execution of their duty.

Owen Beale, prosecuting, said the 46-year-old was spotted giving a one-fingered gesture towards officers on patrol in New Street, in the early hours of Sunday, March 10.

"The officers spoke to him about this and let him go on his way," Mr Beale said.

"Around an hour and 10 minutes later he gave them the V sign repeatedly and they spoke to him and he was extremely abusive.

"He tried to headbutt PC Myatt and then grabbed him by the testicles and started to squeeze. He also kicked out at WPC Bone."

Mr Beale added that WPC Bone suffered a bruised shin and a cut lip due to Jones' actions.

"PC Myatt didn't specify his injuries, but I'm sure it did cause him pain."

He added that Jones had a long history of similar incidents.

Richard Wilkes, defending, said his client, from Teme Road, Tolladine, was an alcoholic who was under the influence of drink at the time of the incident.

"He's sorry about what happened, particularly about hitting the WPC," he said.

"He accepts he told the officer he would grab him by the testicles if he arrested him, and clearly this is what he did.

"The kicks were an accident as he was being put sideways into the police van."

Magistrates jailed Jones for two months for the assaults. There was no separate penalty for the abusive behaviour.
