PHILIP Bushill-Matthews (You Say, April 24) is being rather disingenuous regarding my recent letter.

I did not say "...all three political parties were run by political fanatics." What I said was "that politicians elected by far less than half the electorate are determined to force us into Europe, against the wishes of at least half the wider electorate, is an obscene parody of democracy."

I referred to that situation as "political fanaticism." England is increasingly being run by diktat, from the unelected Commissioners of Europe.

In 10 years time, changing our "government" in Westminster will be akin to changing tables on the Titanic.

By then, Westminster MPs will have all the authority of dead sheep. Brussels, via the "Regions," will be ruling England.

Mr Bushill-Matthews says people have the right to vote or not vote, and that "those that vote determine the outcome. That seems fair to me."

In my opinion, that is poppycock. Most electors voted against Labour in the last election. Labour ended up with a landslide majority. That is an obscene parody of democracy. It proves that our first past-the-post system of elections has long ceased to represent the will of the people.

Our election system is indefensible. It is simply a crutch to enable either Conservative or Labour politicians to be routinely returned to government.

It denies parliamentary power to those members of the electorate, who regularly support the so-called minor parties. That power is denied to those parties because it would mean the end of the comfortable two-party system of either Conservative or Labour governments, which have reduced "politics" to the level of odium in the public mind.
