THREE Worcestershire men in a boat are heading off on a ‘boys own adventure’ round the coastline of the UK to raise money for St Richard’s Hospice.
Stockbroker Adam Martyn-Smith from EFG Harris Allday in Ombersley will be joined by friends Mike Mockett from Abberley and Clive Murray of Chaddesley Corbett in the Great British RIB Rally.
They are one of 20 teams taking part in the cruising adventure in June, circumnavigating mainland Great Britain and Ireland including going round the top of Scotland in a RIB, or Rigid Inflatable Boat.
They will be facing the challenges of the sea in an 8m long RIB for 12 days in June.
Ombersley resident Adam, 47, said: “I’ve done a few coastal trips but nothing on this scale at all. I’m expecting it to be a real challenge but am looking forward to the camaraderie, learning more about seamanship from experts and seeing some stunning coastline. We are due to stop in some beautiful locations and will be fortunate enough to see an ever-changing shoreline which few others get to discover.”
The team will also be recording sea life for a nature conservation organization during the 2,000 nautical mile trip.
Adam, who has four children Amelia, 13, Henry, 11 and nine-year-old twins Maisie and Sam, has enjoyed boats all his life and has owned RIBS for the last eight years.
He added: “We are all up for a boys-own adventure with a bit of camping and maybe catching our own fish to eat. If the going gets tough we may treat ourselves to a bit more luxury somewhere along the way!”
All the participants are raising funds for hospices around the country and Adam says he hopes to raise as much as possible for St Richard’s.
St Richard’s Hospice Fundraising Manager, Tricia Cavell said: “I think this sounds an amazing challenge – it’s a tough test but will no doubt be a fantastic experience. I hope the seas stay calm for the team and wish them ‘bon voyage!”
