MAJOR restoration work costing £80,000 is well underway at a historic landmark tourist attraction near Droitwich.
Delicate work to restore the famous Sir James Thornhill wall paintings is now taking place at Hanbury Hall.
Surface cleaning, the consolidation of cracks, repairing previous restoration work, restoring areas of flaking paint and preserving the paintings with a matt varnish coating are all being handled by a specialist team of experts.
Sir James Thornhill was commissioned by the builder of Hanbury Hall, Thomas Vernon, and the paintings were completed in 1709.
Sir James Thornhill became a distinguished artist going on to paint the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral and the Painted Hall at Greenwich.
The three main walls depict part of the story of Achilles and the ceiling shows an assembly of Greek gods.
Visitor Services Manager Alice Eddy said: “These wall paintings haven’t had this scale of work done on them since they were painted 300 years ago so this really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
