ROADWORKS causing traffic delays by Powick bridge will ensure Worcester’s street lights stay on.

Central Networks is carrying out essential maintenance on under- ground electricity cables which supply the city’s street lamp network.

Work began two weeks ago after several street lights on the A449 Malvern Road failed and caused power cuts.

A spokesman for Central Networks, which was notified by Worcestershire County Council on Wednesday, February 25, said: “The power lines actually supply all of Worcester’s street lights as well as the 30mph traffic signs along that road. So it is a health and safety issue and we’re working to get everything back up and running as soon as possible.”

Workmen have dug a 370 metre-long excavation along the footpath leading to the bridge in order to carry out repairs. New cables will be laid over the existing ones.

Work is due to be completed by the middle of next week. Until then temporary traffic lights will control the flow of cars and motorists are warned to expect delays both ways.

The bridge was closed for more than a month last year, between July and August, when Worcestershire County Council carried out essential repairs to stabilise its structure.
