A DRIVER was lucky to escape with minor injuries after a head-on smash left his car overturned in the middle of a busy road.

A man in his 60s was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital after the crash in Henwick Road, Worcester, at about 3.40pm yesterday.

Henwick Road was closed off between the junctions for Himbleton Road and Martley Road causing traffic chaos during rush hour as commuters made their way out of the city.

Eyewitnesses said a black Golf clipped the wing mirror of a parked car before hitting a Peugeot 106 which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The smash sent the Golf back across the road where it hit another parked car before landing on its roof right outside the Wheatsheaf pub.

Landlord Guy Beech, aged 27, said two men dragged the injured driver out of the wrecked vehicle while he called 999.

An ambulance crew, incident support officer, the police and fire service attended the scene.

Mr Beech said: “I was in the pub doing the accounts when I heard a wing mirror getting clipped.

“I looked out of the window to see a car literally flying through the air before landing upside down.

“The driver was semi-concious and had a very nasty head injury, there was a lot of blood.”

The driver of the Peugeot 106 was not harmed.

A spokesman from West Midlands Ambulance service said: “Considering the damage done to the vehicle the driver was very lucky to escape with minor injuries.”
