FROGS, newts, dragonflies and water-loving plants have been carved out of wood and installed on Pershore’s wetland area boardwalk.

Children from Abbey First School, who have been involved in planting in the wetland area, were invited to the official unveiling of the sculptures by Tom Harvey, who created the Leafing Through History sculpture on an old beech tree trunk near the town’s abbey.

He was commissioned once again by Wychavon District Council to carry out the work and was also sponsored by Fountains, the park’s maintenance contractors.

Lynn Stevens, parks officer at Wychavon, said: “We’ve worked with Tom in the past and his artwork makes a great focal point for the park.

“We hope people will be really intrigued by this interesting and educational concept and that it will be a real attraction and bring more people along to enjoy the park.”

The new piece of artwork has used four pieces of oak which have been carved to a theme of wetland wildlife.

These pieces have been fixed to the handrail of the boardwalk.

The life cycle stages have been included in the carving so the frog spawn and tadpoles at various life stages have been carved on the lower level of the oak posts, moving up to the adult frog at the top.
