Why not work on the canals?

WITH a new volunteer leader in post and an interesting array of events planned for the next 18 months, British Waterways is seeking volunteers to get involved with important heritage work on the Droitwich Canals Restoration Project.

With the major construction work on the new Junction Canal progressing well, there are plenty of other interesting and varied jobs for volunteers to come and try. With no experience necessary volunteers can expect to get involved with plenty of hands on work.

Some of the activities on offer over the next few months include making repairs to brickwork on locks, installation of lock ladders, restoration of lock gate quadrants and the installation of bollards.

Training for all of this work will be provided, along with the necessary tools and equipment.

Volunteers are currently using traditional methods to shape sandstone coping stones, these stones will be put to good use on the locks on the new Junction Canal.

British Waterways volunteer team leader John Brownbridge said: “We’re really keen for local people of any age to come and join us on a whole range of the exciting projects that we’ve got planned for this year.

“Everyone is welcome to come and get involved, no special skills are required as we provide all our volunteers with on the job training, tools and equipment. Wear some old clothing and steel toe capped boots, bring your lunch and we’ll keep you well supplied with tea, coffee and biscuits throughout the day.”

If you would like to get involved with volunteering on the Droitwich Restoration Project, the volunteering days take place every Monday and Thursday.
