Liberal Democrat councillor Mel Allcott has been elected as the new mayor of Worcester.

The city and county councillor for Claines, who is also the party’s candidate for Worcester MP, was appointed to the role at a meeting at the Guildhall last night (Tuesday, May 15).

Labour councillor Matt Lamb will serve as the deputy mayor.

Cllr Allcott named her consort for the year as her “long-suffering partner” Andrew Lee and announced two back-up consorts, Mike Mullins and Stuart Wild.

She said her theme for the year is Youth Matters and named her mayoral charity as Perdiswell Young People’s Leisure Club.

“I think young people have had a really tough time and so I really want to focus on that,” said Cllr Allcott. “I believe the leisure centre is the biggest provider of youth services across the city, so please do give them as much support as you can.”

She said the mayor’s civic service will take place on June 23 and on September 27, the inaugural banquet will return.

“I think if we get our guest list correct we will be able to achieve a high amount of fundraising,” said Cllr Allcott.

Nominating Cllr Allcott for the mayoral role, Cllr Karen Lawrance said: “In Mel I have met the kindest, most determined and caring person, who is as faithful to this city as the residents are to her."

Seconding the nomination, cllr Sarah Murray said: “The fact that Mel was re-elected with the highest number across the city is just a snapshot of the force that is Mel Allcott. A force that I’m sure we will all become accustomed to.”

Nominating cllr Lamb for deputy mayor, cllr Robyn Norfolk said: “In many of my conversations with Matt, his love for the city, its diversity, culture, art and architecture shine through.”

Cllr Louis Stephen said it had been an "honour and a privilege" to be the mayor of Worcester for the past 12 months and was a memory he would treasure forever.

Cllr Karen Lewing said cllr Stephen had raised more than £7,000 for Age UK and had stuck to his promise to attend every mayoral event on his bicycle, come rain or shine.
