A PROFESSIONAL Worcester violinist is set to run the London Marathon later this month.

Dr Lara James will raise money for the audiology department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, at the famous event on Sunday, April 21.

Dr James, a specialist in baroque violin who has performed across the globe with leading period instrument orchestras, has worked with the challenge of partial deafness since childhood.

Two years ago she was the first patient to receive a pioneering Cochlear Osia implant at the department.

Since her operation, in addition to teaching at some of the region’s leading schools and being invited to lead orchestras and perform around the country, she has worked to raise awareness of how deafness can affect musicians.

Dr James was invited to speak at the European String Teachers’ Association’s international conference in Cardiff last year on ‘making music beyond the sound barrier’.

Educating people on the challenges facing those that are hearing impaired and breaking down stigmas remains a strong commitment.

Dr James, a keen parkrunner whose previous furthest distance had been 10km, decided to run the marathon to thank the hospital for all the support that she receives.

She said there have been many challenges to preparation along the way, including a fractured wrist earlier this year, but recent training runs have now seen her reach 17 miles as well as complete her first ever half-marathon race.

Dr James said: “I never dreamt that I would train for a marathon, let alone have the chance to take part in the iconic London Marathon.

“By doing so, I would just like to give a little back to all the amazing medics that have helped me.”
