A group of trekkers have completed a five-day hike through the Jordanian desert to support a city-based hospice.

The group of 16 raised £48,975 for St Richard's Hospice in Worcester.

The trekkers persevered through harsh desert conditions and stormy weather, following ancient Bedouin migration trails on a five-day journey to the world-renowned archaeological site, Petra.

Events and community fundraising lead at the hospice, Sofia Gunster, who was a part of the group, said: "It really was the most incredible experience, taking in some spectacular scenery.

"What made the trek even more special was the wonderful group of people making every gruelling step together for St Richard’s.

"Friends for life were made camping out under desert skies."

She added: "To raise such an incredible amount to help the hospice be here for patients and families is testament to scale of the challenge and the tenacity of our trekkers – we can’t thank them enough.

"They’re all hospice heroes."

The challenge saw the hikers on foot for between six to eight hours daily, from Sunday, March 17, for five consecutive days.

The hospice’s own clinical team members, Julie Reece, head of community nursing, Nicci Lane, in-patient unit staff nurse, and Helen Gander, in-patient unit senior staff nurse were among those who took part in the event.

In a display of support, a family of six undertook a 136-mile walk along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, also contributing towards the cause.

The hospice, an independent charity, offers support to over 3,100 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire each year.

With costs estimated at £10.28 million for the year 22/23 to provide patient care and necessary support services, the hospice relies on voluntary support.

Seeking to keep the momentum going, St Richard’s has already planned a 'Trek the Alps' trip slated for 2025.

This three-day hike in the Alps will give fundraisers the chance to trek through three countries in three days.

An information session about the challenge will be held at the hospice on Tuesday, April 16 between 6pm and 8pm.
