A WORCESTER foster carer will run the London Marathon on Sunday, April 21 for the NSPCC.

Phil Causer fosters for Child Care Bureau alongside his partner Angela Edwards and will raise funds for the charity that supports vulnerable children.

He said: “The NSPCC is the nearest charity to what we do. Their focus involves being out in the community and helping people to see what is going on behind closed doors.

“The NSPCC works really hard in all areas of abuse and neglect. They make sure there aren’t any children out there who are suffering needlessly.”

Phil wakes up at 4.30am to begin his gruelling training before the rest of the household wakes up.

He does four shorter and faster runs in the week and a long run every weekend, taking about three-and-a-half hours to cover around 20 miles.

Phil, who has dropped almost 50 pounds in weight in the meantime, said: “I have done the best part of 1,000 miles of running in training before the marathon event itself.”

A foster carer with Child Care Bureau for four years, he said: “It has been the best thing we have ever done. It is very hard. It is challenging but challenging for the right reasons. These children need help.”

The number of children in foster care in Worcestershire has increased by 19 per cent in the last five years and today more than 20 additional foster carers are needed.

Child Care Bureau, part of the National Fostering Group, is appealing to those considering becoming foster carers to help.

Phil said he feels nervous and excited for the challenge ahead.

He added: “I’m not a runner. I was a sprinter at school and long-distance running would make my eyes water at the thought of it.

“I am nervous because it is a long way. It is a proper endurance test. People don’t just give you money towards a charity. You have to do something worthwhile.”
