TWO blockbuster films have sparked an online trend of people booking to see both on the same day.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig's Barbie are both being released on Friday, July 21 in cinemas across the UK.

Across the UK, people have been booking to see both films on the same day in a trend coined 'Barbenheimer'.

Oppenheimer tells the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer (portrayed by Cillian Murphy) and his role in the development of the atomic bomb, also starring Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh.

Barbie is a modern reimagining of the classic children's doll, where Barbie (portrayed by Margot Robbie) suffers a crisis that leads her to question her world and her existence. The film also stars Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Will Ferrel and the new Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa.

Both films are two of the most anticipated projects of the year so far, and fans have been torn over which film they want to see.

Worcester's two cinemas, Vue on Friar Street, and Odeon on The Foregate, will be showing the films.

Akeem Marere, General Manager at Vue Worcester, said: ‘While many movie fans will find themselves picking between Barbie or Oppenheimer come Friday 21 July, it’s clear some dedicated Vue customers don’t intend on missing out on either film.

"To accommodate for the high demand, Vue Worcester has plenty of screenings of Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbusters.

"So, whether you’re watching one or both titles, be sure to do it the right way and watch them on the big screen – the way they should are meant to be seen."

Vue figures show that 19 per cent of customers who have booked to see Oppenheimer in their cinemas have also booked to see Barbie across 91 locations.

Suzie Welch, Interim Managing Director of Odeon for the UK and Ireland, said: “We have also loved seeing the “Barbenheimer” trend on social media, and how this is translating into guest appetite for our best big screen experiences across the film slate this summer.

"We look forward to welcoming guests to enjoy all these exciting releases, perhaps even on the same day, at Odeon.”
