MORE than 1,000 school pupils across Worcestershire are expected to put their green-fingered skills to the test in a special children's growing competition.

Last year 1,200 youngsters from 17 county schools signed up to take part in the contest and it is hoped to prove just as popular this year.

"It’s a great way to encourage children to take an active interest in plants and how they grow."

Webbs of Wychbold is providing the plants, pots, compost and gardening tips for the youngsters to grow their own bright pink petunia shockwave.

Budding gardeners will have five weeks to nurture their plants to fine examples and take them to Webbs on Sunday, July 13, for judging during the garden centre's family fun day.

Advertiser/Messenger chief reporter Pete Lammas is set to be on hand to help with the judging All entrants taking their plant to Webbs that day will receive a medal and winners will be picked from each school, as well as an overall champion of champions, who will receive a trophy, Webbs vouchers and other prizes.

Webbs executive chairman Ed Webb said: "We've had lots of interest from schools wanting to take part. It was a huge success last year across Worcestershire and it's a great way to encourage children to take an active interest in plants and how they grow. And with the right care and attention, the plants will reward their growers by producing beautiful blooms."
