SIR - Congratulations on your forthright editorial on the affairs of The Priestley (T&A, December 5).

The Priestley does need help, certainly, if it is to continue to function as one of the city's cultural assets.

The Priestley may be grossly under-resourced but it is certainly not bankrupt, its assets greatly exceeding its liabilities.

But to realise those assets would entail the destruction of a working theatre which would seem seriously to lose the plot, an act of cultural vandalism. I mean, does Bradford really need a fourth casino or a new lap-dancing club?

Meanwhile, although in administration, it is very much a case of "business as usual" with a heavy programme of scheduled events, including Jazz at The Priestley, one of the undoubted successes of recent years.

The more people who attend events, the more likely any rescue package is to be successful.

The final curtain - let's hope not!
