Christmas parcels plea

AN SOS has gone out to the people of Droitwich Spa to support our armed forces this Christmas.

Each year since 2003, Support Our Soldiers has sent Christmas parcels to members of the armed forces serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and on other overseas operations. Last year, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of kind hearted folk nationwide, nearly 2,500 parcels were despatched.

“The parcels mean much more than a box filled with seasonal goodies. They represent the support and good wishes of the public and show our brave soldiers that we are thinking about them.”

Now the SOS Parcel 2007 Appeal is under way and supporters want to make it even bigger and better.

Local co-ordinator Julia Holmes said: "The parcels mean much more than a box filled with seasonal goodies. They represent the support and good wishes of the public and show our brave soldiers that we are thinking about them."

There are a number of ways in which people can help. They can make cash donations directly on the official website, make up their own parcels, fundraise, promote the appeal or help with packing and wrapping.

Julia added: "Our standard parcel costs just £5. This is filled with a selection of items such as a Christmas cake, a selection box, coffee or chocolate sachets, toiletry items, an individual present and a Christmas card - all small enough to go into a shoe box. We also encourage people to send a card or message to be included in the parcel."

Businesses, shops and supermarkets are already being approached for items and Julia is planning to visit schools to get parents and children involved.

Supporters are also appealing for the use of vans or trucks to transport the boxes to a central point in York.

The campaign runs until December 5. Any cheques or postal orders should be made payable to Support Our Soldiers and sent to SOS Xmas Parcel Appeal, PO Box 70, Shipley, West Yorkshire.

The website can be found at supportoursoldiers.co.uk For information about the local campaign, contact Julia on 0121 6806805.
