PROTESTS will be held outside railway stations amid mounting anger over an expected 3.5 per cent increase in regulated train fares.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) will stage demonstrations on Wednesday outside stations in cities including London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds and Edinburgh.

The union claims passengers are paying “through the nose” for overcrowded services.

ADDRESSES in the Midlands were being searched as police investigate a man who crashed a car outside the Houses of Parliament in a suspected terror attack.

The 29-year-old UK national remains in police custody after his arrest on suspicion of preparing an act of terror.

The silver Ford Fiesta was driven from Birmingham to London late on Monday, spent almost five hours in the Tottenham Court Road area and was then driven around the Westminster area for more than 90 minutes, before it crashed into a security barrier just before 7.40am on Tuesday.

MINISTERS have been urged to show “greater ambition and apply more resources” to address the developing security situation in the Arctic.

A panel of MPs have warned that a resurgent Russia could mean a return to “great power competition” in the region.

In their report, On Thin Ice: UK Defence in the Arctic, the defence sub-committee identified the Arctic and High North as an area where Russia might seek to expand its presence and influence.

A BRITON was stabbed to death in New York by a woman who claimed she wanted to “rid the house of evil”, police have alleged.

Faye Doomchin, aged 66, has been charged with second degree murder in connection with the death of the 60-year-old woman in the Great Neck area of Long Island on Monday.

Detective Lieutenant Stephen Fitzpatrick, of Nassau County Police, told a press conference that the victim had been visiting the US from England for a holiday.
