TALENTED law student Elle Woods looks set to return in a third Legally Blonde film.

Reese Witherspoon, who played the character in the original 2001 film and its 2003 sequel, confirmed the new movie on Instagram.

In a short clip posted to her 13.2 million followers, the actress is seen gliding across a pool on a float, accompanied by the caption: “It’s true…#LegallyBlonde3”.

The announcement comes as it was revealed by Deadline that Witherspoon was “near a deal” with MGM to reprise the role of Woods 15 years after we last saw her in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White And Blonde.

The films were a box office success, with the first raking in $141 million (£105 million) while the second grossed $124 million (£93 million).

Scriptwriters Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah are said to also be in talks to write the third film, according to Deadline, after they adapted the original Amanda Brown book for the first movie.

No news has yet been released on the plot or if Luke Wilson, among other original cast members, will be joining Witherspoon.

The last film saw her character work to successfully pass through an animal-testing ban while working for Congresswoman Victoria Rudd.

The movie ended with the stylish and idealistic Woods setting her sights on the White House.

According to Deadline, the plot will be “in the spirit of the first film” and will centre on female empowerment.
