NEW data laws come into force in Europe today, but how will the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) affect businesses and the general public?

The General Data Protection Regulation is a new, EU-wide law that gives greater power to regulators to penalise companies who mishandle personal data or are not transparent about how their business uses it.

For consumers, it brings new powers that require firms to obtain clear consent from users before processing their data, as well as grants users a right to easily access the data collected from them and transparency on how it is being used.

NORTH Korea has said it is still willing to sit down for talks with the United States “at any time, at any format” after President Donald Trump abruptly cancelled his planned summit with Kim Jong Un.

Mr Trump blamed “tremendous anger and open hostility” by Pyongyang and abandoned for now a meeting that held the promise of a historic peace deal but also the risk of diplomatic meltdown.

North Korea issued a statement on Friday saying it is still “willing to give the US time and opportunities” to reconsider talks “at any time, at any format”.

THE heartbroken parents of a French nanny who was tortured and murdered by the couple she worked for say her killers deserve the death penalty.

Sabrina Kouider, 35, and Ouissem Medouni, 40, beat, imprisoned and tortured Sophie Lionnet to death at their home before throwing her body on a bonfire.

After the pair were found guilty of murder on Thursday, Miss Lionnet’s mother, Catherine Devallonne, said the couple should be “burned at the stake”.

IRELAND goes to the polls on Friday for a referendum on liberalising one of Europe’s strictest abortion regimes.

Voters will decide whether to repeal the Eighth Amendment of the constitution which prohibits terminations unless a mother’s life is in danger.
