AN improving Oldbury secondary school has received praise from inspectors after Ofsted rated the school as ‘good’.

Perryfields High School received the positive rating following an inspection in January, after its previous assessment in 2016 had rated the institution as ‘requires improvement’.

In the Ofsted report, staff were recognised for their teaching, stating: “Teaching and learning are now good and are especially strong in English and mathematics”.

The report also recognised leaders have ‘made improvements to teaching and learning’ at the Oldacre Road-based secondary school and pupils now receive a ‘good education’.

It was also complimentary about pupils who attend the school, describing them as ‘confident’, ‘self-assured’ and they ‘understand how to be successful learners’.

However, the inspectors found some pupils whose progress was ‘not rapid enough’ and in 2017, students did not make good enough progress in the sixth form.

Headteacher Ian Barton, who joined the school in September 2017, said: “We’re thrilled with our latest Ofsted report and are really pleased that the comments of the inspectors recognise the hard work and progress we have made over the last couple of years.

“I would like to thank all the pupils, parents, staff and governors for their continued support and dedication to the school.

“As acknowledged in the report, we have developed an aspirational and ambitious culture at Perryfields and we will continue to strive to achieve high standards and performance and learn from the recommendations of the report.”

Councillor Simon Hackett, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for children’s services, congratulated the school on its Ofsted report, adding: “Credit goes to everyone involved – children and young people, Mr Barton, teachers and governors, parents and carers – in achieving this fantastic result for the school.”
