TRIBUTES have been paid to a dedicated Wyre Forest martial arts instructor who has died.

Ron Bampfield, who founded Kidderminster Martial Arts Club, died of pneumonia at Worcestershire Royal Hospital in January aged 87.

Mr Bampfield was first introduced to martial arts while stationed in Malaysia with the army as an 18-year-old.

After completing national service he continued his studies in judo, ju-jitsu, Aikido and karate, before setting up a judo club in Kidderminster in Foley Park School.

He also visited Japanese masters Kenshiro Abbe and Gunji Koizumi, who came to Britain in the 1950s, to expand his knowledge.

He opened Kidderminster Martial Arts Club in 1972 at a centre, which became Kidderminster Youth House.

In 2011, his years of dedication was recognised when he was presented with the 10th dan ju-jitsu belt – the highest accolade possible – in the presence of former students.

Away from martial arts, Mr Bampfield was married to his beloved wife Sheila for 56 years and worked as a weaver at Victoria Carpets after leaving the forces and up until he retired.

His family described him as a special man and said he would be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

Nephew Lee Taylor said: “Ron was a very quiet and humble man who always had time for everyone and was totally devoted to Sheila.

“Ron would often pop into the club to see friends and watch classes.

“He will be greatly missed by Sheila, family and friends as he was a very special man and part of our lives.”
