A DRINK driver was caught travelling home from a nightclub while more than twice over the legal limit, magistrates heard.

Dorin Popa, 27, of Barrie Road, Hereford, pleaded guilty to drink driving at Hereford Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Sara Beddow, prosecuting, said that in the early hours of January 21 police stopped a Vauxhall Astra on Bath Street.

Popa gave a test reading of 84 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35.

Marilena Di Vitantonio, mitigating, said that Popa was a man of previous good character and that there was no aggravating features.

"Popa states he went to a friends party and then went to a club," said Miss Di Vitantonio.

"He didn't intend to drive and consumed several drinks. He didn't appreciate he was over the limit."

Popa was ordered to pay a £200 fine, £30 victim surcharge and £135 costs.

He was disqualified from driving for 18 months, which could be reduced by four months on completion of a drink driving rehabilitation programme.
