AS MANY as 225 jobs could be lost at a Droitwich castings firm as it looks to cut back on costs.

Doncasters Precision Castings, based in Vines Lane, launched a formal consultation with its workforce at the end of January.

As part of the process, which will last at least 45 days, management has entered talks with the site’s joint consultative committee.

Mark Ward, divisional managing director responsible for the site said: “The decision was a difficult but necessary step in ensuring the future of the Doncasters facilities in Droitwich in the face of a global downturn in the gas power generation equipment market, which they primarily serve.

“We firmly believe in the long-term prospects of the facility and that the market will recover following this global rebalancing, however the current downturn has resulted in reduced orders over the coming year as it impacts upon our customers and their supply chain.

“This is, understandably, a difficult time for our employees and we will be doing everything we can to engage with our workforce in Droitwich in order to reduce the need for compulsory redundancies.”

The castings firm has said there are no plans to close either of its facilities in Berry Hill Industrial Estate or in Vines Lane.

Cllr Richard Morris, executive board member for economy and housing on Wychavon District Council, said: “I understand the proposed job losses are linked to a global downturn in the gas power generation market and are necessary to ensure the long-term future of the Droitwich site.

"I have complete confidence that Doncasters remains fully committed to Droitwich as they recently purchased land and gained planning permission for a major expansion so I am hopeful that when the market recovers we will see the company growing again.

“That said, every job lost is an individual tragedy for the person involved and their family.

Cllr Morris added that opportunities will be available for workers if redundancies are made.

He added the local economy is doing well with many businesses expanding.
