Millions of Britons may still be using their mobile phones while driving despite penalties for the offence being doubled, research suggests.

Since March 1, drivers who use a hand-held phone have faced receiving six points on their licence and a £200 fine – up from the previous penalty of three points and £100.

While 89% of the 1,727 drivers surveyed by the RAC said they were aware of the law change, more than a quarter (26%) of those who knew of the tougher penalties admitted to regularly using their devices behind the wheel.

The death toll for the 7.1-magnitude earthquake which hit Mexico has been raised to 230 – as rescuers desperately work to rescue a young girl trapped alive in the rubble of a collapsed school.

The number of confirmed dead in Mexico City rose to 100 as the nation’s capital bore the brunt of the deaths and damage in Tuesday’s quake.

The girl was found by rescuers in the debris at the Enrique Rebsamen school in a southern area of the capital.

Two more men have been arrested in connection with the Parsons Green bombing, taking the total to five, Scotland Yard said.

Men aged 30 and 48 were detained during a raid by counter-terrorism officers at a home in Newport, South Wales, at around 5.10am on Wednesday.

A third man, 25, who was arrested at a separate address in Newport shortly after 7pm on Tuesday. Two other suspects detained on Saturday remain in custody.
