DESPITE grey skies, Droitwich ArtsFest 2017 got off to a great start on Saturday, with a large crowd at St Andrew’s Square for the opening event.
Town crier Edgar Harwood announced the start of the festival, and Mayor Shaun Best and MP Nigel Huddleston gave short speeches.
The free events commenced with Voices Unlimited from Worcester who gave an hour-long performance, followed later by Droitwich-based Sing and Tonic. Swing 42 (UK) provided background music in the square during the afternoon.
Later in the day Droitwich Spa High School presented their free music showcase in St Andrew’s Church and attracted a large audience.
On Sunday, Keith Slater’s high-tech Frank Sinatra Celebration in St Andrew’s Town Hotel was a sell-out, with the audience giving him a standing ovation at the end of his performance.
The coming weekend includes local teacher David Izod delivering his monologue Alan, Alec, and Bert in St Andrew’s Church at 7.30pm on Friday.
Saturday will see poets, authors and actors reading poetry and literature in St Andrew’s Square from 11am, and the same day at 7pm, Park’s Cafe in Victoria Square will host a free poetry extravaganza.
