WORK on a new rescue and rehoming centre for neglected and abandoned animals has stalled after heavy rain from Storm Imogen flooded the building site.

Work was temporarily halted this week because heavy rain flooded much of the building site at Broomhall, on the outskirts of Worcester.

Groundworks started at the end of November and the foundations for the new buildings are almost complete.

Geraldine Haynes of the the RSPCA Worcester and Mid Worcestershire Branch said wet weather had been a regular occurrence since work began and the contractors have continued to work in difficult conditions.

However this is the first time they had to go back home and wait for water levels to reduce.

She said: "We are hoping it won't be long before they are back on track and play resumes.

"Drainage for the site, including a special sewage treatment plant and installation of a new electricity connection are next on the itinerary.

"We need the public's support to help us to get up and running with the much needed centre for abused, neglected and abandoned animals in the Worcestershire area.

"Our branch is self-financing, a separate charity in its own right and will receive no financial help from RSPCA HQ towards this project.

"The branch trustees would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to organise a fundraising event for the new animal home or become part of the local fundraising group."

The branch needs to raise funds to build the new animal reception with veterinary room, grooming room, kitchen and 20 large kennels attached, with outside runs and dog exercise areas, where the dogs can be occupied during the day.

Anyone wishing to donate can send a cheque made out to "RSPCA Worcester Branch" and send to 12 Sansome Place, Worcester WR1 1UA or donate via the branch website, www.rspca-worcester.co.uk/

There is a "Buy A Brick" appeal, where people can buy bricks for themselves or in memory of a beloved family member or pet.

It is £3 a brick and can be purchased by cheque, via the website or by texting BRIC24 £3/£6/£9 etc to 70070 to donate, for example BRIC24 £9. ]A record will be kept at the centre, when open, of everyone who has been part of the "Buy A Brick" appeal and those which have been bought in memory.

The branch says 100 per cent of all donations will go entirely to the building work.

The branch is run by volunteers who give their time freely for animals in need in the Worcestershire area.
