THE PRINCESS Royal awarded a Droitwich sailor with a medallion recognising his 30-year dedication to promoting boating.

Pete Webby, who volunteers at Upton Warren Sailing Club, was given the Royal Yachting Association's Lifetime Commitment Award at a glittering ceremony in London on Friday, November 20.

"I am very proud I have had my efforts recognised," said Mr Webby, who has been an active member of Upton Warren SC for more than 30 years.

The dad-of-three, who was nominated for the award by the club, continued: "The volunteering I do has not been done for any reward, there are many others similarly committed who are also deserving of appreciation.

"The club has been almost my second home since retiring. I have made many lasting friendships at the club and sailing is a very satisfying pastime as each time you are out on the water there are different problems and magic moments."

During his time with the sailing club, Mr Webby has taught many people through his role as a dinghy instructor, senior instructor and powerboat instructor.

An active Worcestershire School Sailing and Canoeing Association (WSSCA) volunteer in the role of Bosun, Mr Webby his has maintained the association's boats to racing standards while also helping organise and run its many training and regatta events.

Recently he has worked to make the Upton Warren SC site more inclusive and accessible for people of all abilities.

Duncan Truswell, RYA sport development manager, said: "The RYA Volunteer Awards are our opportunity to say 'thank you’ on behalf of clubs and associations that affiliate to the RYA, to their volunteers, the people that really make a difference to help people get afloat.

"It’s our opportunity to take a bit of time out to appreciate the commitment these individuals make to the sport in helping people get afloat safely and enjoyably."

A total of 53 awards were bestowed upon volunteers from across the UK and each winner was presented with a commemorative medallion and certificate.
