WYCHAVON has once again proved its public toilets are more than bog standard, after scooping top honours in the annual loo of the year wards.

Run by the British Toilet Association, the awards rank loos provided by different organisations on a range of factors, which together make them clean, safe and hygienic.

Councils, hotels and shopping centres take part in the competition, which sees inspectors pay a visit to each toilet before issuing a bronze, silver, gold or platinum rating.

The 12 public loos Wychavon looks after in Broadway, Droitwich, Evesham and Pershore were entered into the contest, with six achieving the top platinum rating and six being given gold status.

Councillor Emma Stokes, portfolio holder for environment at Wychavon District Council, said: “We’re delighted with these results and huge thanks must go to our cleaning contractor Mitie Cleaning, who look after the toilets on our behalf, for their hard work.

“The savings we need to make, due to funding cuts, meant last year we had to take the difficult decision to stop providing attendants at our public toilets.

“However this shows we can make savings and maintain high standards at the same time.”

Wychavon will officially be presented with the awards on Friday, December 4, at a ceremony in Solihull where it will also find out its place in the national league table.

Last year Wychavon finished 7th but is hoping to improve in 2015.

The six toilets which won platinum awards were Broadway Activity Park in Broadway, St Andrews Square and Lido Park in Droitwich, Viaduct Meadow and Waterside in Evesham and the Asda car park in Pershore.

The six toilets which won gold were High Street and Milestone Ground car park in Broadway, Abbey Park, Oat Street and Old Brewery in Evesham and Church Walk in Pershore.
