KEEN readers who launched into this summer’s Record Breakers Reading Challenge at Droitwich Library are being urged to try and get to the end of their sixth book by the challenge deadline this month.

The challenge was launched on June 27, with youngsters from four to 12 years old taking on a mission to read six books over the summer break, while under fours could join in with a separate scheme. Readers could receive incentives along the way from bookmarks and posters to sheets of stickers, and even free entry to nearby Croome Park.

Anyone who finishes all six books of their choice will be invited along to an award ceremony for readers across the entire county, and they will receive a medal and a certificate.

The most popular reads amongst young people this summer have been the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney, and the Rainbow Magic Fairy books.

A group of young people have been working all summer in Droitwich Library helping to sign up new readers to the challenge and organise record breaker themed events ranging from creating the world’s longest paper chain, to the largest shared read of the first chapter of James and the Giant Peach, but while more than 250 youngsters signed up for the challenge, only about 70 have been in to the library to let staff know they’ve completed it.

There is still time to complete the challenge, as it doesn’t finish until Saturday, September 19, so young readers are being urged to hurry up and finish their final books before the deadline.
