IN a ‘Battle of the Bands’ contest at Droitwich Spa High School, a five piece group came out on top, performing a song composed by one of their members as part of her music GCSE.

‘Paper Moon’ made up of students Tom Jallands on vocals, Sylvie Whitfield and Fern Hatfield-Evans on guitars, Ross Barnes on bass, and David Rean on drums, came top of the contest, winning out over two other groups from the school.

All three bands were made up entirely of students from years nine to 12, with all three being highly commended by Fred Mallinson, head of music at Hagley RC High School who acted as judge for the competition.

Guitarist Fern Hatfield-Evans also composed one of the songs in their three song set as part of her GCSE music.

Mr Kevin Dowson, head of music at Droitwich Spa High School, said: “This is always one of the highlights in the music department’s calendar. There’s a really positive, friendly competitive spirit to the competition and both the performers and the audience always have a great time.”
