THE new MP for Droitwich Nigel Huddleston, has been elected onto the cross party Culture, Media and Sport select committee.

The committee monitors the policy, administration and expenditure of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and its associated bodies, which includes the BBC, on behalf of the House of Commons and the electorate.

The committee also conducts inquiries, and holds hearings into issues of current interest, coming into the public spotlight recently when it took evidence from Rupert Murdoch over the phone hacking scandal.

In this parliament the committee is likely to come back into the headlines with the review of the BBCs Royal Charter, broadband roll-out and mobile coverage.

Five Conservative MPS were selected for the committee in a secret ballot with Mr Huddleston being the only new MP to be voted in.

He said: “I am delighted to have been elected to the committee as it will allow me to bring my experience from outside of Parliament to good use. The committee will oversee sports, creative industries, broadcasting, travel and tourism, and digital sectors - precisely the areas I worked in prior to becoming an MP, so I feel I can contribute some relevant experience as well as enthusiasm to the work of the committee.”
