POLICE investigating the brutal car-jacking of a pensioner on his driveway have charged a Sandwell man with wounding and robbery.

Reginald Stocking was opening the gate to his Chapel Street home in West Bromwich last Sunday, (May 10), when a man jumped behind the wheel of his Peugeot 207.

Mr Stocking fought to stop the thief but the 78-year-old was struck by the car and shunted against a wall. He remains seriously ill in hospital.

Last night West Midlands Police detectives charged 34-year-old Andrew Jones with wounding, robbery and burglary – the latter relating to a break-in at an address in Grosvenor Road, Tipton, shortly after the 9.20pm car-jacking.

Unemployed Jones, from Dingle Street in Sandwell, has been remanded in police custody and is set to appear before Warley magistrates tomorrow morning (May 18).

Stacey Johnson, from Maria Street in West Bromwich, has also been charged with handling stolen goods; it’s alleged the 26-year-old stored a TV taken during the burglary at her flat.

Detective Sergeant David Hughes said the investigation team is still appealing for witnesses.

“We recovered Mr Stocking’s blue Peugeot 207 from Walter Street in West Bromwich," he said.

"Today officers will be at that location with a similar vehicle in the hope it may jog people’s memories and secure information about who dumped the car.

“And tonight officers will also be handing out flyers in Chapel Street and talking to motorists and passers-by – hopefully we’ll speak to someone who witnessed the robbery or was in the area at the time and can provide useful information.”

Anyone with information should call Det Sgt David Hughes at West Bromwich police station on 101.
