A CHEMICAL spill on the Kidderminster Road in Droitwich led to fire crews having to set up a road block, donning gas tight suits to tackle the spillage.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 14 at 9.24pm on Kidderminster Road, when four fire appliances and an Environmental Protection Unit were called out to discover a liquid spillage of an unknown substance, which had spilled from several containers holding different chemicals within the vehicle.

The fire crews worked closely with staff from West Midlands Ambulance Service and West Mercia Police to discover what the substance was, using gas tight suits, and monitoring equipment. A road block and cordon were also established to ensure the area was made safe, and the substance was eventually identified within an oversized drum.

Station commander Mark Strutt from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The crews worked closely with on site specialists to identify and secure the substance, which was due to be delivered to another site. Leaking was identified from four separate 18kg drums in the lorry. Due to the nature of the hazard it was important that we took all precautions whilst minimising the impact on local residents and businesses. Working with West Mercia Police, we established a road block and cordon to prevent access to the site.”
