YOUNG sportsmen and women from Droitwich Spa High School have been organising and leading sporting activities for other youngsters around the county as part of a ‘Sports Leaders’ programme.

15 students from Droitwich High School helped to run the under 19s Lords’ Taverners boccia tournament at the school, bringing together competitors from across the county.

The tournament, which was organised by Carina Taylor, a teacher from Chadsgrove School in Bromsgrove, saw teams competing in the Paralympian precision ball sport of boccia, which is similar to bowls or pétanque, using leather balls to try and get close to a white ‘jack’.

Ms Taylor was impressed with the students’ maturity and organisational skills. She said: “The leaders were outstanding; they worked extremely well in their groups of three, showing excellent teamwork. They gained in confidence with the competitors showing patience and respect. The leaders applied their knowledge of the boccia rules when officiating and effectively developed their communication skills. Well done to all of them.”
