AN officer from the Droitwich squadron of the Air Training Corps has been recognised for his work for the community as part of the annual Diamond Jubilee Community Recognition Awards, organised by Wychavon District Council.

The awards, which used to be known as the Wychavon Bursary, celebrate individuals and groups from across the 29 Wychavon parishes, who provide exceptional service to the community, and Flt Lt Paul Wilde of 2516 (Droitwich) Squadron Air Training Corps was nominated for his award by Droitwich Town Council for his work with the squadron in Droitwich.

Flt Lt Wilde has been with the squadron for 34 years, after joining as a cadet in 1981. He took over charge of the squadron in 2007.

The squadron, which joins in with a number of community event throughout the year, won National Marching Drill Competition in 2011 and the Morris Trophy for second best in the country in 2013.

Flt Lt Wilde was presented with a trophy to keep for a year, and a cheque for £200 to help support his work.

He said: “I am shocked and surprised at being nominated but very proud to have this award in recognition of my work with the 2516 (Droitwich) Squadron Air Training Corps.”

Councillor Lynne Duffy, chairman of Wychavon District Council, presented him with the award. She added: “It was tremendous to see and recognise so much local talent and community spirit. I feel very proud knowing that we have such dedicated people in our community doing such wonderful work.”
