PEOPLE across Worcestershire are being asked to help launch a campaign for better train services - with an MP offering a snazzy watch as a prize.

Sir Peter Luff says he was left "disappointed" after Chancellor George Osborne's autumn statement focused on M5 improvements in the county rather than railways.

The Conservative says he was left dismayed after the Government announced high-profile improvements to trains from Norwich to London, despite Sir Peter insisting East Anglia already has services "we can only dream of" in Worcestershire.

He believes a big reason for Norwich's success is a campaign called 'Norwich in Ninety', which called for trips to the capital within 90 minutes.

Sir Peter now wants people in Worcestershire to suggest a slogan for this county, which will be used to lobby the Government and train firms.

A branded House of Commons watch, paid for out of his own pocket, will be handed to the winning suggestion.

"Norwich and Worcester are similar sized cities, roughly the same distance from London," he said.

"The two lines serve same similar populations and similar sized economies.

"I think the success of the Norwich campaign in gaining a service that takes ninety minutes owes a lot to its name - 'Norwich in Ninety'.

"It is catchy and memorable and it’s played a big part in making the Government sit up and listen.

"I have been racking my brain trying to come up with something similar for our campaign to improve train services to and from Worcestershire - I haven’t had much success so far and I am hoping people can help me."

He says the slogan must make it clear that Worcestershire wants trains from Worcester to London in less than two hours.

"This is a first for me, but I’m sure a snappy phrase could play a big part in winning us a better train service," he added.

"More frequent and quicker services to London would be a big boost to our economy, as well as making it easy for us all to travel to the capital."

It closes on Tuesday, January 6 and people can either email slogans to peter.luff.mp@parliament.uk or write to Sir Peter Luff, the House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA.

Sir Peter, who represents Mid-Worcestershire, is stepping down at the next general election but says he will continue to press for better rail services beyond next summer.

Mr Osborne's autumn statement offered Worcestershire serious improvements to the M5 from Droitwich through to junction seven, Worcester south.
