THIS Saturday celebrity antiques expert Henry Sandon will be at Droitwich Library signing copies of a book on local historian Nelly Copson.

Ms Copson, who died in 2011, was a well-known figure in Droitwich, and local historians Claire Lloyd and Paul Jones believe a lot of people will be interested to know more about her life.

Ms Lloyd said: “Nelly was interviewed years ago for an oral history project, and she recorded one tape about her life, and one about her knowledge of the High Street and Friar Street shops, buildings, and people. I got hold of a copy of the tapes a while ago and decided to transcribe them, and that’s the basis of the book. We’ve interviewed people who knew her very well, and collected together stories about Nelly. She was a very important character in Droitwich, and she was very generous with the time she’d give over to finding things out for people in the library. She was always on the photocopier, and finding out things for people. When she died people lined the streets, and St Andrew's Church was heaving with people paying their respects.”

Ms Copson had been good friends with Antiques Roadshow expert Henry Sandon, and he agreed to write the foreword for the book, which features a number of photographs supplied by friends and family members including her great-niece.

Henry Sandon will be at Droitwich Library, along with Claire Lloyd and Paul Jones this Saturday from 10am to noon, when they will also be selling copies of the book for £8.

Anyone who wishes to buy a copy of the book, but is unable to attend the event, will be able to pick up a copy at Droitwich Library, the Heritage Centre, Grace Cards, or a number of shops on the High Street. Alternatively they can contact Claire Lloyd directly on 01905 771865.
