STAFF and volunteers from Droitwich Foodbank have thanked local people for their generosity in giving time, money and food donations in its first few months.

The foodbank received help from a local scout troop at its warehouse, while Waitrose staff helped out at a recent supermarket food collection and a team of more than 80 volunteers have given their time to help out at the foodbank centre and warehouse on a regular basis.

Project leader David Stanbury, said: “Once again we have been overwhelmed with the generosity of local people who have supported the foodbank in so many ways. We were delighted by the response to the two supermarket collections we held recently, at Waitrose and Tesco, which resulted in donations of nearly 1.5 tonnes of food. People have also been donating at our permanent collection points at Barclays & Lloyds banks, Gorgeous Hair Design, Physique Gym, and at the town’s Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Emmanuel & Salvation Army churches.”

Since it opened in July, the foodbank, which was set up by a local branch of Churches Together, has already given emergency parcels of food to more than 179 local people. Giving them three days worth of food to help them out in extreme circumstances.

Mr Stanbury added: “Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus, who told his followers to care for those in need, and we’ve been asking people to donate additional items such as Christmas cakes or puddings, mince pies, and chocolates to help the families who are referred to us by our partner agencies to enjoy a special festive treat.”
