ROADS and street furniture in Droitwich town centre could be set to improve with a package of measures under development at Worcestershire County Council.

Plans to redevelop the town’s transport infrastructure could include improved street lighting, resurfacing the area around the town centre, and replacing old and poor quality street furniture.

Consideration is also being given to plans to redesign the junction at either end of High Street, to allow for a reduction in vehicle speeds, improve places for pedestrians to cross and protect historic buildings.

There are also proposals to redevelop St Andrew’s Road and to improve the cycling routes in and through the town centre, as well as improving access for the town centre car parks.

Councillor John Smith, cabinet member with responsibility for highways said: "The redevelopment of Droitwich town centre and surrounding areas such as the North Street area and St Andrews Road will see the area regenerated in terms of footfall and redesign. We have some very exciting proposals that will see these areas redesigned but designed to allow greater access for pedestrians and cyclists – whilst also ensuring that congestion is kept to a minimum for motorists."

The council is eager to get the public involved with the plans as much as possible, and it would like to hear from people over what their priorities are for the town centre.

Due to funding limitations, the council won’t be able to do all of the work at once, and it is hoped that a public consultation will allow residents to prioritise their preferences before the final design is agreed on for the town centre and surrounding areas.

The closing date for the consultation is Thursday, October 30.
