OLIVER and Amelia were the most popular first names given to babies in 2013 in England and Wales, findings from the Office for National Statistics have revealed.

The name Amelia has been in the top spot since 2011 now but Oliver has taken the place from Harry, which topped the list for the past two years.

In England, Amelia was the most popular name in all regions and Oliver was the most popular name in five out of the nine regions.

While in Wales, Oliver was the most popular name, replacing Jacob, while Amelia has been the most popular name since 2012.

Oscar and George replaced Alfie and Riley in the top 10 most popular names, climbing from number 17 to seven and number 12 to 10.

Poppy also replaced Lily in the top 10 most popular names, climbing from number 13 to seven.

And last year girls were more likely to be given an unique name, with more than 35,000 different names given to newborn baby girls.

There were more than 27,000 different boys names.

Other factors also play a part, including celebrity trends.

In recent years royal names have proved a hit, with Harry ranked third this year, William eight and George tenth.

And popular TV show Game of Thrones has played its part with 11 baby boys named Theon this year and six baby boys taking the name Tyrion.
