THE landlord of the Gardeners Arms pub in Droitwich has pitched in with several local businesses to help build a fence for a kitchen garden at Witton Middle School.
Simon Berry enlisted the help of Country Builders Merchants in Droitwich, Travis Perkins in Droitwich, Hillend Sawmill in Martley, Droitwich Print, Spa Displays in Droitwich, and Wilkos in Droitwich, which all donated materials, so that he could construct a fence for the school’s new kitchen garden.
The fence features trellis work so that pupils at the school can grow their own climbing vegetables including cucumbers, beans and tomatoes, and they’re all set to get to work for the new school year in September.
Mr Berry said: “One of the school heads came down, and we had some rustic panels we built in the pub beer garden, so they asked for my help and I said okay.
“I built the whole thing on my own. You need to put things back into the community, you can’t just take. I would definitely do something like that again in future. Pubs used to be a respected part of the community, and work with the community. Pubs aren’t pubs anymore, they’ve lost that direction.”
